Sweet Methods: Simple Tips to Help You Store Honey Properly

Honey would probably be one of the most useful ingredients when it comes to creating many of your signature meals. And how could it not be? 1. Choose Containers Carefully

If you are particular about storing your honey in the right way, then you might want to pay special attention to the container that you choose before storing it. Ideally, you should choose something that is made of glass which would not only protect your honey from moisture, air, and light but would also allow you to see the supply at all times.

Plastic or metal containers, on the other hand, are less ideal as it is difficult to gauge the amount of honey stored within, and it would be quite difficult to properly monitor the quality of honey that can be stored in them.

2. Keep It in Room Temperature

Honey tends to crystallise over time, thus, making it a little bit more difficult to pour it out of its container properly. In order to keep your honey from crystallising, you have to keep it at room temperature.

Of course, you should never directly expose your honey to heat or sunlight, as doing so may compromise its colour, flavour, and quality.

3. Refrigerate the Supply

Although most of the guides would tell you to store your honey at room temperature, you can still store it in the refrigerator, although it is recommended that you remove it from the refrigerator at least once or twice a year and place it back in the room temperature to allow it to get rid of moisture and crystallisation.

4. Keep the Container Lid Closed

If you are planning to store the honey in a large container like a gallon jar, then you should make sure that its lid is always closed tightly. One of the reasons is because it will prevent moisture from getting in, thus, extending the shelf life of the honey.

The second reason why you should keep the lid closed tightly is to keep bugs, dust, and other unwanted particles from getting in as well.

5. Be Careful While Pouring Out the Honey

According to a study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology, crystallisation of honey can occur when you store it in a wide-mouthed container. This is because the amount of moisture in the container is not enough to fully dissolve the crystals when the honey is poured out. Thus, additional moisture is needed to dissolve the crystals.

The recommended method to use should be to use a narrow-mouthed container, but if you don't have one, you can turn the container on its side and pour the honey out of it. You can also place the container on a plate or a damp cloth to help it get rid of the moisture.


When it comes to storing your honey properly, you must always remember to choose the right type of container that is made from glass, keep the container lid tightly closed, and ensure that the container is not exposed to heat, air, and light.

Remember that the honey should be kept at room temperature to prevent it from crystallising. The only exception is when you place the container in the fridge for a short period of time.
